This year The Blue Bird Circle celebrates 90 Years of Lifting Up Lives of children. In 1923, Houston was booming, flappers were flapping and women first gained the right to vote. But there were 15 young women who came forth to answer a higher call, foregoing the frivolous, putting politics aside, and pledging to make a difference in their community. Thus was born The Blue Bird Circle, the oldest women’s charitable organization in Houston.
Since the earliest years, our Circle’s singular focus has been to meet the challenges of children with neurological diseases. Together with the generous support of the community, we have seen our Little Hospital, completed in the 1930’s, grow into the internationally renowned Blue Bird Circle Clinic for Pediatric Neurology at Texas Children’s Hospital where our doctors oversee 20,000 patient visits each year. We have raised more than $40 million over the years to make this happen. And the band of 15 original members has grown to more than 500 women who donate more than 100,000 volunteer hours each year.
With your help we have accomplished much. Our physicians and medical researchers are nationally recognized for being on the cutting edge of curing epilepsy and are making advances in treating autism, muscular dystrophy and other neurological disorders that affect millions of children. There is still much to be done. More than 400,000 children still suffer from epilepsy; 1 in 88 children have autism; and muscular dystrophy is diagnosed in 1 in 14,000 births.
That is why we are asking you to support The Blue Bird Circle Style Show & Luncheon event “Lifting Up Lives” on April 3, 2013 at the Houston Country Club. By doing so, you will play a significant role in ensuring that our endeavors continue and The Blue Bird Circle vision remains a bright light for children in the future. Also, we think you will have a very enjoyable time.
