Some 300 Blue Birds and guests attended the first Spring Speaker Luncheon, Thursday, April 24, at the Houston Country Club. The event, chaired by Anna Hodges and themed Growing in Our Commitment to Children, hosted Barbara Pierce Bush and grossed over $112,000. Profits benefit The Blue Bird Circle Clinic for (Pediatric Neurology at Texas Children’s Hospital) or just say The Blue Bird Circle Clinic at Texas Children’s Hospital.
Guests enjoyed a VIP champagne reception held prior to the luncheon, and had the opportunity to meet and be photographed with Bush. (or you can say Ms. Bush … in journalism, you would use “Bush” only)
Committee members working to make the luncheon a success were Carole McGarry and Annette Moore, underwriters chairs, Helen Welk, invitations and program chair, with Mary Ann Bernhard as co-chair, Pat Lucas, treasurer, Mary Ann Macey, registration chair, and Ellen Vestewig, Publicity. Kathy Boudreaux carried the theme in her artwork featured on the programs, menu and party favors. Ann Gunn, Diane Hopkins, Maria Lacy worked registration, and Wallie Womack handled the raffle with Marie Bell’s help. Sandra Truxillo contributed to the preparations prior to the luncheon.
Dodi Willingham, decorations chair, with Brenda Atkins and Ellen Stough, created herb planters for centerpieces and prepared herb seed packets with vintage flatware. The flatware, fashioned as plant stakes and stamped with the names of herbs, was used with the seed packets as party favors. The decorations committee also staffed a nursery where herb plants, planters and vintage silverware were sold. All herb plants were generously donated by H.E.B.
The Luncheon concluded with the release of more than 150 helium balloons, as guests sang Happy Birthday to a surprised Texas Children’s Hospital’s CEO Mark Wallace.
Among guests were major table donors Carole McGarry, Jules and Albert Smith, Betty Ann Graves, Diana Johnson, Sandra Settegast Mewhinney, Janet Bergstrom, Johnnie Lallinger, Ann Elmer, Penny Loyd, Texas Children’s Hospital, Mary Kay Coleman, Dr. Zachary Hodges, Gina Saour and Ellen Vestewig.
